Licensing

Images may be licensed for editorial, educational or limited personal uses. Please enquire for other uses.

Licensed images are typically supplied as digital files for display or reproduction as permitted by the licence.

Please be aware that no images have property/model releases, and use is at the licencee's risk — the photographer assumes no liability in the event of disputes over rights, claims for damages etc. This is not normally a problem for non-commercial use, but local laws may vary. The photographer may be able to assist with obtaining releases for certain images.

Images may only be used for the specific purpose(s) licensed. Copyright of images remains with the photographer, and transfer of copyright is non-negotiable.

Personal Use

• Permission for entirely personal use of images for non-commercial, non-promotional purposes is granted free of charge without the need for authorisation. Such uses include private study materials and computer screen background images for computers for personal use. Such permission is limited to the low-resolution images that may be directly downloaded from this web site.
• Permission is normally granted without a fee for use of images by students in personal academic reports, such as school or college reports and coursework, and masters or doctorate theses. However, permission must first be obtained for such use, and any images so used must have a credit/copyright notice (© Mark A. Brown, all rights reserved) displayed adjacent to the image.
• All public display or dissemination of images is strictly prohibited.

Editorial Use

The price of licenses of images supplied for editorial use (limited generally to one-time use) depends on factors such the type of publication (e.g. web, print, multimedia), its circulation, the reproduced size (e.g. half-page, whole page) and location (e.g. cover, frontispiece, inside page). Please ask for a quotation, giving as many details about the intended use as possible.

Publications using an image, including, but not limited to print, web and multimedia, must include a credit/copyright notice, which may appear separate to the photograph on a "credits" page or adjoining the image.

No images are licensed for free in exchange for credits.

• Licences do not give transfer of copyright or title; copyright of images remains with the photographer.
• Photographs, including digital images, may not be reproduced or distributed except as permitted under the terms of the licence. Images may not be used for any purpose other than as specified under the terms of the licence without prior agreement.
