Craft Annexe, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

Yasushi Tamura, 1910 (Renovated 1977, Yoshiro Taniguchi)

The Former Headquarters of the Imperial Guards, a Meiji era western-style brick building, and an Important Cultural Property.

The building was designed in 1910 by military engineer Yasushi Tamura as the imperial guard headquarters. After the end of World War II, it was planned to be demolished, but after calls for its preservation, it was designated it an important cultural property in 1972 and allocated to be used as an annex of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

The exterior, entrance, and hall have been preserved, while the interior has been reconstructed as a gallery designed by Yoshiro Taniguchi. The two-sided wooden staircase in the main entrance hall recalls the building's past grandeur.
