From the outside a simple concrete box, the building was extensively re-furbished with work completed in 2001, partly for earthquake strengthening. Alternations include the addition of a restaurant and shop outside, and major internal changes; the atrium has gone as have the rear stairs. The floors are now continuous, increasing exhibition space but at the expense of some key original features.
